Can I use a different type of bread?

Yes, you can use any sturdy bread like ciabatta or whole-grain bread, but sourdough provides the best texture and flavor for this sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 clove garlic grated
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp fresh chives dill, chopped
  • flaky salt
  • 4 sourdough bread slices
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 6 oz sharp cheddar and white American cheese
  • 10 oz roasted deli turkey thick-cut
  • 6 bacon slices thick-cut
  • 4 leaves butter lettuce or romaine
  • 1 vine tomato sliced
  • 1 ripe avocado sliced
  • 6 red onion rings thin

Method

Prepare the bacon
  1. Cook bacon in a skillet over medium heat until deeply crisp, about 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway. Rest on paper towels to absorb excess grease.
Make the garlic herb mayo
  1. Whisk together mayonnaise, grated garlic, dijon mustard, lemon juice, and chopped chives. Season with a pinch of flaky salt.
Prepare the vegetables
  1. Sprinkle tomato slices with salt and rest on a paper towel to draw out moisture.
  2. Slice the avocado and red onion into thin slices.
Broil the bread and cheese
  1. Position an oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler and set the broiler to high.
  2. Spread a thin, even layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
  3. Place all 4 slices of bread mayo-side down on a sheet pan. Pile cheddar and American cheese evenly across all 4 slices.
  4. Broil for 4-6 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Watch closely to avoid burning.
Assemble the sandwich
  1. Start with 2 slices of bread, cheese-side up. Spread garlic herb mayo on top of the melted cheese.
  2. Layer the turkey, bacon, tomato, avocado, and lettuce on top of the mayo.
  3. Top with the remaining slices of bread, cheese-side down. Press gently, slice on the diagonal, and serve immediately while the cheese is still melty and the bread is crisp.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, cook the bacon on a wire rack over a baking sheet in the oven.
  • Use a mix of sharp cheddar and white American cheese for the best flavor and melt.
  • Let the salted tomato slices rest for a few minutes to prevent the sandwich from becoming soggy.
